The Author: Ibn Ata' Illah al-Iskandari
Ibn Ata' Illah al-Iskandari (d. 709H, 1310CE) was an Egyptian scholar, faqih, and mystic from the town of Alexandria known for his powerful sermons, influential Da'wa, and profound insights. After obtaining knowledge of the Sharia, he became a student of the famous Shadhili Shaykh, Abu Abbas Al-Mursi, from whom he learned the intricacies of Ihsan (perfection) in approaching Allah, Most Glorious. Shaykh Ibn Ata' Illah used to give lectures at al-Azhar which were broadly attended. His words greatly impacted the souls of the attendees and he had an aura of great majesty. He authored multiple works, mainly centered on the spiritual path.

The Text: al-Hikam al-'Ata'iyya
Of all of the works of Ibn Ata'illah, the most celebrated is al-Hikam al-'Ata'iyya. This classic work consists of three portions: (1) aphorisms, (2) correspondences with his students teaching the path, and (3) munajat, or intimate Duas to Allah, subhanahu wa taala. It has been said that the Hikam has in it the condensed aims of Imam al-Ghazali's monumental Ihya Uloom al-Deen in a simple, easily understandable format. Scholars from all corners of the Islamic Ummah have been producing commentaries and teaching the Hikam since the time of Imam Ibn Ata'illah, and chains of transmission going back to the Imam are still present today.
